Kickstarter has been the launching place for quite a few fabulous pens. Many of these pens have been awesome, and came with a price to show it. I’ve always passed on these pens.
I finally backed my first Kickstarter project. Not a pen, but the Twist Bullet Pencil.
Bullet pencils were very popular in the early to mid 1900s. They are a simple sleeve and cap that fits a pencil stub. Capped, you can safely carry a pencil in your pocket. Posted, a tiny pencil stub becomes long enough to write with comfortably.
Bullet pencils were once popular advertising giveaways, especially among the farming community. I imagine a day when bullet pencil giveaways were as popular as cheap advertising pen giveaways are today.
I’ve really enjoyed bullet pencils since discovering them. I’m writing today with a vintage bullet pencil from Renner Funeral Home and & Ambulance Service, Urbana, Ill.
When I pull a bullet pencil pout of my pocket to jot down a note, people often ask what I’m writing with. Upon inspection they ask where they can get one. I usually send them to eBay – until now.
The guys from Huckleberry Woodchuck and Metal Shop have teamed up to create the Twist Bullet Pencil, available now on Kickstarter.
The twist is a modern take on vintage bullet pencils, and wow does it look good. I’m excited to back this well designed and crafted homage to americana.
Definitely check this one out. Don’t delay – the Kickstarter funding ends October 31, 2014.
Back in the Nineties I wouldn’t have given a wooden pencil, let alone a bullet pencil, a second thought, so if bullet pencils were wildly popular then I missed the trend. I think you meant they were popular in the early-to-mid 1900’s.
Barista, I like your posts about pens and coffee, but I love your posts about pencils and coffee. Keep the refills coming!
HA! You’re right, Junius. The 90s couldn’t handle the awesomeness of bullet pencils. Updated the post.
